‘You Have a Question for Me, Margaret?’ Kristi Noem Snipes at Brennan — After CBS Host Pins Her Down on Whopper Claim She Met Kim Jong Un

Beyond the stunning anecdote in which she revealed she once shot and killed her dog, Governor Kristi Noem’s (R-SD) new book has generated controversy over several stories reported to be completely inaccurate. Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation, Margaret Brennan called her out over the reported inaccuracies — and the governor didn’t like it.

In a testy clash Sunday, Brennan pressed Noem over the false claim that she met with Kim Jong Un — a claim which her team seemed to lay at the feet of the book’s ghostwriter and editor.

“It was brought to our attention that the upcoming book ‘No Going Back’ has two small errors,” Mr. Fury said. “This has been communicated to the ghostwriter and editor. Kim Jong-un was included in a list of world leaders and shouldn’t have been.”

But examining the full context, the tale about Kim Jong Un was very specific.

“I had the chance to travel to many countries to meet with world leaders — some who wanted our help, and some who didn’t. I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all). Dealing with foreign leaders takes resolve, preparation, and determination.”

Sunday morning, Brennan bluntly asked Noem, “Did you meet Kim Jong Un?”

“As soon as this was brought to my attention, I certainly made some changes and looked at this passage,” Noem said. “And I’ve met with many, many world leaders. I’ve traveled around the world. As soon as it was brought to my attention, we went forward and have made some edits.”

“So you did not meet with Kim Jong Un?” Brennan said. “That’s what you’re saying.”

Noem oddly refused to say.

“You know, I met with many, many world leaders, many world leaders,” Noem said. “I’ve traveled around the world. I think I’ve talked extensively in this book about my time serving in Congress, my time as governor, before governor, some of the travels that I’ve had, I’m not going to talk about my specific meetings with world leaders. I’m just not going to do that. This anecdote shouldn’t have been in the book. And as soon as it was brought to my attention, I made sure that that was adjusted.”

Brennan was still trying to get to the bottom of how the mistake happened.

“I’m wondering, who is it that you confused Kim Jong Un with?” Brennan said. After an exchange in which Noem confirmed she has visited North Korea and the DMZ, Brennan followed up by saying, “I’m asking about that specifically because you made the point to bring [Kim] up twice and that he was a little tyrant.”

“You have a question for me, Margaret?” Noem said, icily.

“Yes, I do,” Brennan said — before noting that Noem read the passage in question while she was recording the audiobook. “I know you read this book before it was published because you released video of your recording of the audio book. You didn’t catch these errors when you were recording it?”

Noem, like Tim Scott before her on this Sunday morning, deflected to blame the media to avoid answering a question she didn’t like.

“This is what is so discouraging about politics and the media today is that we have the White House that just recently came out and confirmed that President Joe Biden has misspoken, has made mistakes, has even outright lied over close to 150 times just this year,” Noem said. “And you’ve done nothing to question him on any of that.”

“I’m asking you about your book here, which we have,” Brennan said.

“I’m just asking why am I being treated differently than every other person that you’ve interviewed?” Noem said. “I’ve looked at your last interviews —”

“I’m quoting you,” Brennan said.

“You don’t interrupt other people,” Noem said. “You let them talk.”
